AUSTIN (KXAN) — After receiving a $20,000 donation, 80 Pflugerville ISD teachers went on a shopping spree to buy classroom supplies.
“This support helps alleviate the financial burden for these teachers, who often pay for school supplies out of their own pockets,” the Pflugerville Education Foundation (PEF) said.
According to PEF, the teachers were surprised by the donation after being loaded onto school buses for an unknown destination, which ended up being an Office Depot in the city.
“The atmosphere was energetic as teachers, who had no idea what the afternoon held moments before, filled their shopping carts with notebooks, art supplies, and other essential classroom materials,” PEF said.
Organizers said the event surprised educators from five schools in the district—Dessau Middle School, Dessau Elementary School, Spring Hill Elementary School, Delco Elementary School and PACE High School.
“These schools were selected in recognition of the incredible work they have done to improve individual student achievement and overall school progress,” PEF said.
Teachers were given $250 to spend as they wished, according to organizers.
“Watching these teachers’ look of confusion turn to excitement as they learned what was happening was priceless,” said PEF President Staci Young. It was so wonderful to see them buy the supplies they know will set them and their students up for success.”
